ABSTRACT

This chapter illustrates how the change to a virtual setting challenged students' social connectedness and sense of belonging. It demonstrates how students found a way to build social connectedness in a virtual setting that reinforced their sense of community. The chapter discusses how Students of Color experienced the COVID-19 interruption. It offers insights into whether thriving in college is even possible for students when their means of creating community have been disrupted. At the University of Utah, the detachment was experienced by students in their interactions with faculty and their relationships with their friends, peers, and classmates. The closing of campus and the shift to online learning also limited students' social connectedness with friends, classmates, and peers. Students also relied on new communities to gain motivation and achieve academically. University employees were also a part of students' relational communities. Some students created a strong emotional connection with staff members, such as advisors and student affairs professionals. ABSTRACT

During the COVID-19 pandemic, point-of-care genetic testing (POCT) devices were used for on-time and on-site detection of the virus, which helped to prevent and control the spread of the pandemic. Smartphones, which are widely used electronic devices with many functions, have the potential to be used as a molecular diagnostic platform for universal healthcare monitoring. Several integrated diagnostics platforms for the real-time and end-point detection of COVID-19 were developed using the functions of smartphones, such as the operating system, power, sound, camera, data storage, and display. These platforms use the 5V output power of smartphones, which can be amplified to power a micro-capillary electrophoresis system or a thin-film heater, and the CMOS camera of smartphones can capture the color change during a colorimetric loop-mediated isothermal amplification test and detect fluorescence signals. Smartphones can also be used with self-written web-based apps to enable automatic and remote pathogen analysis on POCT platforms. Our lab developed a handheld micro-capillary electrophoresis device for end-point detection of SARS-CoV-2, as well as an integrated smartphone-based genetic analyzer for the qualitative and quantitative colorimetric detection of foodborne pathogens with the help of a custom mobile app. © 2023 SPIE.

ABSTRACT

The most common causes of acute hepatitis in children are hepatitis A and autoimmune hepatitis. Hepatitis in the course of Wilson's disease is sporadically registered in adolescents. An increase of activity of aminotransferases both in the course of multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) and in the course of COVID-19 has been observed. Hepatitis is common in children with MIS-C and is associated with a more severe presentation and persistent elevation of liver function tests. To date, no cases of acute hepatitis in children due to COVID-19 have been reported. We present 2 cases of acute hepatitis in children where the only cause seems to be a previous asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection.Copyright © 2023 Termedia Publishing House Ltd.. All rights reserved.

ABSTRACT

Online teaching management has been widely used during the COVID-19 pandemic situation and it has a direct impact on practical teaching management because students do not have access to equipment, chemicals, and tools. This study's purpose is to evaluate practical learning instruction management and student satisfaction with "photocolorimetric methodology platform for measuring egg yolk color" during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study compared the student satisfaction and effectiveness of a learning instruction platform for measuring egg yolk color using a laboratory machine and an online teaching management platform using photocolorimetric methodology. The results of this experiment revealed that the two platforms evaluated yolk colors L*, a*, and b* similarly (P > 0.05). Furthermore, the students were satisfied with the learning instruction with the photocolorimetric methodology platform for measuring egg yolk color at 4.76 points or the most level.

ABSTRACT

The study is devoted to a comparative analysis and retrospective evaluation of laboratory and instrumental data with the severity of lung tissue damage in COVID-19 of patients with COVID-19. An improvement was made in the methodology for interpreting and analyzing dynamic changes associated with COVID-19 on CT images of the lungs. The technique includes the following steps: pre-processing, segmentation with color coding, calculation and evaluation of signs to highlight areas with probable pathology (including combined evaluation of signs). Analysis and interpretation is carried out on the emerging database of patients. At the same time the following indicators are distinguished: the results of the analysis of CT images of the lungs in dynamics;the results of the analysis of clinical and laboratory data (severity course of the disease, temperature, saturation, etc.). The results of laboratory studies are analyzed with an emphasis on the values of the main indicator - interleukin-6. This indicator is a marker of significant and serious changes characterizing the severity of the patient's condition. © 2023 IEEE.

ABSTRACT

Iron and zinc are important minerals in humans in sub Saharan Africa, whose deficiency is known as "hidden hunger" due to the lack of recognised symptoms in the early stages. Although iron deficiency is the most prevalent, zinc is also involved in inhibition of replication of viruses, including the corona virus (COVID-19). In North Kivu and South Kivu provinces where more than 50% of common bean is produced and consumed in Democratic Republic of Congo, 36% and 47% of preschool children are anemic due to iron deficiency. This paradox is mainly due to insufficiency of iron-rich foods. The aim of this study is to characterise 59 iron and zinc biofortified varieties together with six local varieties of common bean for a potential selection programme in Butembo town in the Democratic Republic of Congo. We focused on 15 qualitative and five quantitative parameters. The qualitative parameters were helpful to distinguish the different morphotypes and for cluster analysis. In addition to the descriptive statistics, the quantitative data were used for Pearson correlation and for principal component analysis, PCA. Qualitative parameters enabled grouping of the study genotypes into 14 morphotypes according to the aspect and colour of the seed coat, the colour around the hilum and the size of seeds. Clustering grouped the 65 genotypes into 12 clusters with the most similar genotypes grouped in the same cluster. Quantitative parameters showed that the study genotypes were dissimilar (P=0.00). A positive correlation was obtained between the days to flowering and the days to maturity (P<0.05) and between the number of pods per plant and the days to flowering. A strong correlation was found between the number of pods per plant and seeds per pod (P<0.01). In contrast, a negative correlation was observed between the 100 seed weight and the number of seeds per pod. The PCA represented on two perpendicular axes showed 64.1% of the total variance of which the 42.3% is explained by the first axis and 21.8% by the second axis. Overall, the study genotypes are morphologically and quantitatively different and thus can be used in a selection programme.

ABSTRACT

The world invasion of dangerous virus diseases such as Covid 19, in the last few years, force people to wear masks as precaution. Although this prudence reduces the risk of infection and viruses' spread, it adds difficulty to distinguishing or identifying a person. This paper proposes a method to analyze images of masked persons for classifying their gender, in addition to identifying the colors of their skin and their eyes. We apply residual learning using the convolutional neural network (CNN) based on the visible part of the face. Cloud computing resources have been used as a convenient environment of substantial computing ability. Also, new database of RGB face images was created for testing. Experiments have been operated on the constructed database beside other datasets of facial images after cropping. The proposed model gives 96% gender classification accuracy and 100% skin/eye color identification. © 2023, Ismail Saritas. All rights reserved.

ABSTRACT

The true impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on mental health has yet to be seen. This chapter explores how students did and did not thrive in college as a result of the pandemic's impacts on their mental health. It explores general findings, and then examines the unique experiences of Students of Color, who, in many cases, were disproportionately impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Student participants conveyed that their mental health declined, which resulted in diminishing motivation to complete schoolwork. However, emotional support networks, school resources, and therapeutic outlets assisted some students in overcoming the barriers to success. Although accessing counseling services proved difficult for some students, those who did have access felt these services improved their mental health. The online class format posed many challenges to students' motivation. While videos and taped lectures were easily accessible resources that professors were forced to utilize due to the abrupt shift to online learning, these students' statements illustrate that they were simply no substitute for inperson interactions. While peer interaction can serve as a catalyst to learning, the lack of it during spring 2020 proved an inhibitor to participants' thriving and motivation. ABSTRACT

Stillbirth is defined as the birth of a viable baby without signs of life. They account for more than 2.5 million intrauterine deaths per year worldwide and are associated with a number of risk factors, the most important of which are maternal and placental factors. Autopsy provides information that may be of use in determining time since death, gestational age of the fetus, mode of death, cause of fetal demise, and the likelihood of recurrence. The format of the autopsy is guided by parental consent, but even when consent is limited, valuable information may be obtained by careful consideration of antemortem test results, imaging, and genetic testing. Where there is a delay between death and delivery, fetuses are affected by maceration, which may increase the technical complexity of the autopsy and impart a number of artefactual changes, which should not be misinterpreted as genuine pathology. The most common pathologies encountered at autopsy are placental abnormalities, changes related to maternal disorders, malformations, and central nervous system pathology. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2022. ABSTRACT

Vaccines are undoubtedly a powerful weapon in our fight against global pandemics, as demonstrated in the recent COVID-19 case, yet they often face significant challenges in reliable cold chain transport. Despite extensive efforts to monitor their time-temperature history, current time-temperature indicators (TTIs) suffer from limited reliability and stability, such as difficulty in avoiding human intervention, inapplicable to subzero temperatures, narrow tracking temperature ranges, or susceptibility to photobleaching. Herein, we develop a class of structural color materials that harnesses dual merits of fluidic nature and structural color, enabling thermal-triggered visible color destruction based on triggering agent-diffusion-induced irreversible disassembly of liquid colloidal photonic crystals for indicating the time-temperature history of the cold chain transport. These self-destructive structural color liquids (SCLs) exhibit inherent irreversibility, superior sensitivity, tunable self-destructive time (minutes to days), and a wide tracking temperature range (-70 to +37 °C). Such self-destructive SCLs can be conveniently packaged into flexible TTIs for monitoring the storage and exposure status of diverse vaccines via naked-eye inspection or mobile phone scanning. By overcoming the shortcomings inherent in conventional TTIs and responsive photonic crystals, these self-destructive SCLs can increase their compatibility with cold chain transport and hold promise for the development and application of the next-generation intelligent TTIs and photonic crystals.

ABSTRACT

Melanoma is an abnormal proliferation of skin cells that arises and develops in most of the cases on surface of skin that is exposed to copious amounts of sunlight. This common type of cancer may develop in areas of the skin that are not exposed to a much abundant sunlight. The research addresses the problem of Segmentation and Classification of Melanoma Skin Cancer. Melanoma is the fifth most common skin cancer lesion. Bio-medical Imaging and Analysis has become more promising, interesting, and beneficial in recent years to address the eventual problems of Melanoma Skin Cancerous Tissues that may develop on Skin Surfaces. The evolved research finds that Attributes Selected for Classification with Color Layout Filter model. The research has produced an optimal result in terms of certain performance metrics accuracy, precision, recall, PRC (what is PRC? Expansion is needed in Abstract), The proposed method has yielded 90.96% of accuracy and 91% percent of precise and 0.91 of recall out of 1.0, 0.95 of ROC AUC, 0.87 of Kappa Statistic, 0.91 of F-Measure. It has been noticed a lowest error with reference to proposed method on certain dataset. Finally, this research recommends that the Attribute Selected Classifier by implementing one of the image enhancement techniques like Color Layout Filter is showing an efficient outcome.

ABSTRACT

This article discusses lexical and semantic changes during the COVID-19 pandemic. In this article, we describe semantic shifts, new concepts, and neologisms associated with the COVID-19 pandemic based on the results of an associative survey. A total of 142 respondents voluntarily participated in our online survey. The term 'coronavirus' was taken as a stimulus word. Respondents had to answer what colour and number the word 'coronavirus' is associated with. The results of the study show that the stimulus 'coronavirus' in the minds of people activates the colours red, green, black, blue, yellow and very weakly causes associations with brown, white, gold, purple, colourless, as well as the frequency of the number 19. Additionally, according to the results of the study, it can be said that during the COVID-19 pandemic, negative meanings of colourative vocabulary were actualized (except green, because this colour began to symbolize safety), and numbers and some new concepts that have a nonpositive colouring appeared.

ABSTRACT

COVID-19 is a highly transmissible disease with severe course especially in patients with nephrogenic hypertensive disease and chronic kidney disease due to a higher incidence of all-type infections than in the general population. The aim of the study is to describe a clinical case of SARS-CoV-2 infection complicated by nephrogenic pulmonary edema and COVID-associated pneumonitis, alveolitis. Description of the case. Patient K.S., born in 1975, was hospitalized 24 hours after symptom onset at emergency hospital due to complaints of increased blood pressure up to 180-200/110-120 mm Hg, temperature up to 38.7degreeC, dry cough, feeling of heaviness in the chest, change in urine color. PCR smear for SARS-CoV-2 was positive. Computed tomography revealed a pattern of bilateral COVID-associated pneumonitis, alveolitis, with 75% involvement. The electrocardiogram revealed signs of left ventricular myocardial hypertrophy. Ultrasound examination showed numerous cysts in the kidneys. Urinalysis at admission: leukocytes - 499, erythrocytes - 386. Glomerular filtration rate (CKD-EPI: 29 ml/min/1.73 m2) and corresponds to stage IV of chronic kidney disease. Coagulogram: fibrinogen: 32.3 (1.6-4.0) g/l, D-dimer: 663 (0-250). Despite the treatment, the patient's condition worsened, the phenomena of cardiopulmonary and renal insufficiency increased, which led to a fatal outcome. During a virological study of sectional material: SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus RNA was found in the lung and kidneys. Signs of bilateral COVID-associated pneumonitis, alveolitis with diffuse cellular infiltrates in combination with changes in the alveolar apparatus, signs of pulmonary edema were revealed. Heart-related signs - swelling of the interstitium, fragmented muscle fibers, some of them hypertrophied, a wave-like deformation of cardiomyocytes, blurring of the transverse striation. Arteries with thickened sclerosed walls. In the kidneys - diffuse damage to the proximal tubules of the nephron with areas of cortical and proximal necronephrosis, areas of fibrinoid swelling. Conclusion. The cause of death of a 45-year-old patient was a severe course of bilateral COVID-associated pneumonitis, alveolitis, which contributed to the development of renal medullary hypoxia and type 1 cardiorenal syndrome, which led to early nephrogenic pulmonary edema.Copyright © 2023 Saint Petersburg Pasteur Institute. ABSTRACT

This study verified the influence of the addition of castanets almond flour (Terminalia catappa L.) in the fermentation process of bread, analyzing attributes such as volume, weight, color, and flavor. The actions were coordinated remotely, in a domestic environment, in the city of Fortaleza (Ceara, Brazil) due to the restrictions caused by the pandemic of the new coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2). About 2 kg of castanets were collected and the processing process included washing, pulp extraction, drying, roasting, and endocarp breaking. The ingredients were placed in a bowl and homogenized until completely incorporated, following the process of kneading, resting, kneading, shaping, fermentation and cooking. For the study, the evaluation was carried out in quadruplicate, with four samples of each dough, these being named Basic Bread (PB) and Chestnut Bread (PC). The dough showed growth between minutes 0 to 60, however, there was a regression between minutes 90 to 120. It is possible to observe that the dough reached its peak of fermentation between 30 and 60 minutes. The PB samples showed an external golden color and white crumb caused by the Maillard Reaction, possibly from the added butter, and had small alveoli. The PB sample had a neutral taste but was salty. No interference was observed in the bread fermentation process with the addition of castanets flour.

ABSTRACT

The socioeconomic context and population vulnerability are directly associated with violence in the country. In Brazil, the Criminal Code provides the illicit act and punishes the aggressor who offends the physical aggression from a person. Interpersonal violence is an illegal act and is associated with the vulnerability of victims. Therefore, the study of the epidemiological profile of victims of interpersonal violence is needed to alert the population about their susceptibility. The present study aimed to design the epidemiological profile of victims of bodily injury from interpersonal violence in the region of Maringa, in the state of Parana, and to study the characterization of dental injuries in terms of permanent weakness and deformity. Four thousand nine hundred sixty-two reports performed between 2018 and 2020 were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Data collected included: sex, age, marital status, the region affected by the bodily injury, type of dental trauma, and responses to "weakness" or/and "permanent deformity". During the period studied, there was a prevalence of female victims (57.8%), white skin color (80.2%), aged between 21 and 30 years (24.9%), single (54.9%), and the most affected region was the upper limbs (32.1%). Regarding bodily injuries with dental involvement, 67 cases were reported, male victims were prevalent (60.3%), and dental fracture was highlighted with 54.4% of examined injuries. The implementation of the Forensic Dentistry Centre took place in August 2019 at the Medico-Legal Institute of Maringa. Also, with the interruption of expert activities in 2020 - due to the COVID-19 pandemic - relevant outcomes regarding permanent weakness were observed. The epidemiological profile of victims is characterized by the female sex, white skin color, the age group from 21 to 30 years old, and singles. Regarding dental trauma, male victims, and dental fractures were prevalent. ABSTRACT

During Covid-19, a facility management researcher/instructor team examined potential effects of various disinfectant treatments on the surface appearance of furniture currently located in their academic facility. Treatments (i.e., bleach wipes, alcohol wipes, disinfectant sprays and UltraViolet wands) are used by students, staff, faculty, visitors, facility managers and custodians in an effort to reduce spread of Corona. Further, EMist© with Vital Oxide treatments were regularly applied by University-contracted facility maintenance staff during study period. While procedures exist for measuring color change regarding light exposure and changes due to abrasion, no current published methods were found regarding surface color before and after Covid-19 intervention treatments. Researchers/instructors anticipate findings from study would inform facility management and other courses. They anticipate results would allow generalizability to hospitality and healthcare. Changes in surface color of upholstered furniture in facilities may be extremely negative regarding interior aesthetics, corporate image, and replacement costs. Therefore, it was determined there was a great need to study the effects of treatments and inform facility stakeholders. Researchers posited that Covid-19 intervention treatments may alter surface color of upholstered furniture over time. The purpose of the study was to develop methodology to examine color degradation that may be caused by agents used in common disinfecting practices. Three seating pieces (drafting chair, drafting stool, classroom chair) made of different materials were studied. Five treatments were applied to each furniture piece at regular intervals over an 8-week period. Researchers measured color before and after treatments. The procedures were photo-documented and videotaped to capture treatments in-process and to support future educational presentations. Preliminary findings revealed limited variability in color changes. Future research should consider other seating and room-finish materials, disinfectants and treatments, facility types, and timeframes.

Pinellia ternata (Thunb.) Breit. (P. ternata) is a very important plant that is commonly used in traditional Chinese medicine. Its corms can be used as medicine and function to alleviate cough, headache, and phlegm. The epidermis of P. ternata corms is often light yellow to yellow in color; however, within the range of P. ternata found in JingZhou City in Hubei Province, China, there is a form of P. ternata in which the epidermis of the corm is red. We found that the total flavonoid content of red P. ternata corms is significantly higher than that of yellow P. ternata corms. The objective of this study was to understand the molecular mechanisms behind the difference in epidermal color between the two forms of P. ternata. The results showed that a high content of anthocyanidin was responsible for the red epidermal color in P. ternata, and 15 metabolites, including cyanidin-3-O-rutinoside-5-O-glucoside, cyanidin-3-O-glucoside, and cyanidin-3-O-rutinoside, were screened as potential color markers in P. ternata through metabolomic analysis. Based on an analysis of the transcriptome, seven genes, including PtCHS1, PtCHS2, PtCHI1, PtDFR5, PtANS, PtUPD-GT2, and PtUPD-GT3, were found to have important effects on the biosynthesis of anthocyanins in the P. ternata corm epidermis. Furthermore, two transcription factors (TFs), bHLH1 and bHLH2, may have regulatory functions in the biosynthesis of anthocyanins in red P. ternata corms. Using an integrative analysis of the metabolomic and transcriptomic data, we identified five genes, PtCHI, PtDFR2, PtUPD-GT1, PtUPD-GT2, and PtUPD-GT3, that may play important roles in the presence of the red epidermis color in P. ternata corms.

OBJECTIVES: This study investigated whether select social determinants of health and worries about COVID-19 resource losses mediated the relations between four parent groups: [1) non-Hispanic White (NHW) parents of children with asthma; 2) Black, Indigenous, or other Persons of Color (BIPOC) parents of healthy children; 3) BIPOC parents of children with asthma; and 4) NHW parents of healthy children (referent)] and parent anxiety and depression symptoms during COVID-19. METHODS: Parents (N = 321) completed online questionnaires about discrimination, anxiety, depression, and COVID-19 impacts on employment/income and access to food and health care. Mediation analyses were conducting using nonparametric bootstrapping procedures. RESULTS: BIPOC parents of children with and without asthma experienced greater anxiety and depression symptoms through greater discrimination compared to NHW parents of healthy children. BIPOC parents of children with asthma experienced greater anxiety symptoms, and both BIPOC groups experienced greater depression symptoms, through greater COVID-19 income losses. NHW parents of children with asthma and both BIPOC groups experienced greater anxiety and depression symptoms through greater worries about COVID-19 resource losses. CONCLUSIONS: The suffering of BIPOC parents, especially BIPOC parents of children with asthma, necessitates multi-level COVID-19 responses to address key drivers of health inequities.

ABSTRACT

The literature on anxiety in Black, Indigenous, and other persons of color youth is a developing area. This article highlights distinct areas for the clinician to consider in working with these populations. We highlight prevalence and incidence, race-related stress, social media, substance use, spirituality, the impact of social determinants of health (including COVID-19 and the Syndemic), as well as treatment considerations. Our aim is to contribute to the readers' developing cultural humility.
